Moving shadows. Colonial outlines is a research and a public program, developed by Beyond the post-soviet in France in 2022-2023 with the support of the National Center for Fine Arts (Cnap). In its framework, the collective seeks to understand what shadows are cast in France by Soviet & Russian colonialism and imperialist thinking.

How can the past and the present of the region be revisited from the perspective of France—a western European country with a strong colonial heritage? How to deconstruct the Western gaze on the ‘(post-)socialist’ countries? How to delink the old imperial ties and create new connections?

The program started in 2022 with two preliminary events: a performance The Method of Constructing Political Truth by Alevtyna Kakhidze curated by Sasha Pevak at the Center Pompidou, as part of the Extra! Festival, and curated open studios Far from the center with the participation of Anti Gonna, Yana Bachynska, and Nikolay Karabinovych, at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris.
